Debit and Credit Card Upgrade Details

Generations Federal Credit Union is pleased to announce the launch of our new Visa® credit and debit cards featuring the latest EMV chip and contactless card technology for enhanced security. If you currently have a GFCU debit and/or credit card, you will receive a new card to replace each GFCU card that you currently hold by the end of November 2019.

To ensure a seamless transition with continuous access to your accounts, please note the following:

New Visa® Credit and Debit Cards will be issued via U.S. Mail
New member credit and debit cards will be mailed to account holders by the end of November 2019. If you have more than one GFCU credit and/or debit card, or if multiple members of your household have one or more credit and/or debit card(s), you may not receive all cards at the same time. Please allow time to receive all cards.

Follow the activation instructions included with your new card
To activate your new card(s), please call the toll-free number on the sticker affixed to your new card, and complete the prompts provided in the message. Your existing card will be de-activated when you complete this process.

Card number will stay the same, but CVV and expiration date will change
Your current credit and/or debit card number(s) will not change.

The Card Verification Value (CVV, three-digit number on the back of the card) and expiration date will change. Please see next section for important information about your new CVV.

Avoid service interruptions by updating card information with your current providers
The new CVV and expiration date may potentially lead to interruption in automatic or recurring payments billed to your credit and/or debit card(s). Please contact merchants to avoid impact to payments made with your card(s).

Current cards will be de-activated on January 31, 2020
For security purposes, current cards will be de-activated on January 31, 2020. Please complete card activation by this date to avoid service interruption.

All other aspects of GFCU credit and debit cards will remain the same. Your credit and debit card transaction limits, online banking and alerts, Rewards programs, fees, credit card interest rates, credit card payments, and address for sending credit card payment will continue according to your current account agreement.

Frequently Asked Questions 

Why is GFCU upgrading to new cards?
GFCU is upgrading all credit and debit cards to EMV and Contactless technology to provide our members with a higher level of security and global acceptance. The EMV chip protects the cardholder and transaction data while contactless technology adds convenience with an additional layer of enhanced security.

How do the EMV and contactless transactions work?
The new GFCU credit and debit cards will work with any point of sale terminal.

  • EMV card reader: Insert card “chip side first” into the terminal until the card “clicks” into place, then follow instructions on the terminal.
  • Contactless card reader: “Tap” the card directly across the card sensor.

Will my card number, PIN, CVV and expiration date change?
Your current GFCU credit and/or debit card number(s) and PIN number(s) will not change.

What will happen to payments I’ve set up with my existing credit and/or debit card?
The new CVV and expiration date may potentially lead to interruption in automatic or recurring payments billed to your credit and/or debit card(s). Please contact merchants to avoid impact to payments made with your card(s).

When will I get my new card(s)?
Your new card(s) will be sent to you in the mail no later than the end of November 2019. If you do not receive your card(s) by the end of November, please contact GFCU.

How do I activate my new card?
Your new credit and debit card(s) will have an activation sticker affixed to the front of the card. Please call the toll-free number on the sticker, and follow the prompts in the message to activate your new card.

I have several GFCU cards, including credit and debit cards at Generations FCU. How will I know which card to use for each account?
The mailer containing each new card will state the type of card being issued. The 16-digit number on your new card will correspond with the card number on your existing card.

If you have more than one GFCU credit and/or debit card, or if multiple members of your household have one or more credit and/or debit card(s), you may not receive all cards at the same time. Please allow time to receive all cards.

Will my current credit and/or debit card still work?
Your current card will be de-activated when you activate your new card. For security purposes, any existing cards will automatically be de-activated on January 31, 2020.

Will contacts for lost/stolen cards and card disputes change?
No; current contacts for lost/stolen GFCU cards and card disputes will not change. Please continue to utilize the current contact numbers to report lost or stolen cards (210-229-1128), or to dispute card transactions (855-847-2027).

Will my payment information, fees or rates change?
No; current payment, fees and rates will remain in place. All credit and debit card transaction limits, online banking alerts, Rewards program participation, current fees and credit card interest rates, and addresses for sending credit card payments will continue according to your current account agreement.
