Stimulus Payments: Information and Details

Update Jan. 6, 2021 – If a tax preparer filed your 2019 tax return, the preparer may have received your stimulus payment, and should be redirecting the payment to the GFCU account designated on your tax return. The IRS payment status tool is still the best place to check the status of your stimulus payment. We will keep this page updated with the latest information as it becomes available.

Update Jan. 5, 2021 – Generations FCU has processed all stimulus payments (Economic Impact Payments) received from the IRS. At this time, if you have not yet received your stimulus payment, please visit the IRS website to check your payment status.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has started the process of issuing the second round of Economic Impact Payments to Americans as part of the COVID-19 stimulus package recently signed into law. These stimulus checks will continue to be issued to eligible taxpayers into the early part of 2021. No action is required by eligible individuals to receive this second relief payment.

We’ve put together some helpful information about these stimulus payments below for your reference. Answers to many of your questions can also be found on the IRS Coronavirus page.

How Payments will be Issued
If you meet the qualifying requirements, your payment will be deposited directly into the same bank account that you designated for tax filing purposes on your 2019 or 2018 tax return. If you received your 2019 or 2018 tax refund by check through the mail, the IRS will mail your stimulus check to the physical address on file. The IRS will be issuing payments in waves, so not everyone will receive theirs at the same time. Please note that if you have not received your relief payment yet, there is no cause for concern. 

Verifying Your Stimulus Payment
If you haven’t already, now is a great time to register for Online Banking and download the GFCU Mobile App so that you can know as soon as your relief payment becomes available. GFCU will process and post your funds as soon as they are received from the IRS. Additionally, if you are receiving your relief payment by mail, you can deposit the check easily using Smart Deposit on the GFCU Mobile App.

Guard Yourself Against Scams 
Stay vigilant about protecting yourself and your money from criminals who want to get their hands on your relief check. Since many people are eager to learn when and how they will receive their check, scammers are taking advantage of the situation by posing as government agencies or organizations involved in the disbursement of the money. Please know that GFCU will NEVER ask you for personal information such as your social security number, PIN or account number via call, text or email. If your loan is being serviced by our partners at Midwest Loan Services and your ability to pay your mortgage is impacted, you may be eligible to delay making your monthly payments, without incurring any late fees or negative reporting to the credit bureaus. Scam Awareness

Several scams have cropped up in response to fears surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. As a valued GFCU member, we want to keep you updated on the scams that you should be aware of as you’re navigating through this uncertain time. Please protect yourself and your loved ones by staying on the lookout for the following scams:

  1. Criminals want to get their hands on your relief check.

The federal government recently passed a coronavirus relief bill that will provide a second round of stimulus checks to American families. Understandably, many people are eager to learn when and how they will receive their check. But criminals are taking advantage of the situation by posing as government agencies or organizations involved in the disbursement of the money. Details of the disbursement are still being ironed out, and anyone claiming they can get you the money now is a scammer.

As long as you have filed taxes for 2018 and/or 2019, you do not need to do anything else to receive your money. For more information on this topic, visit the IRS website on Economic Impact Payments.

  1. Don’t fall for at-home COVID-19 test kits.

One of the more deplorable scams being perpetrated right now is the marketing of vaccines and at-home test kits for COVID-19. Criminals are taking advantage of people’s anxiety for their health and the health of their loved ones. Please know that there is no COVID-19 vaccine or at-home test kit available right now. Any seller claiming to have these products is lying. Save your money and do not fall for this scam. If you think you or a loved one may have contracted COVID-19, please contact your local hospital’s emergency room immediately.

  1. Online sellers will try to scam you out of your money.

Criminals are peddling everything from at-home COVID-19 test kits to health insurance pitches and sanitation supplies. Online sellers may claim to have in-demand products, such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, and more. But before sharing any payment or personal information with a seller, make sure the organization and/or website is reputable. If you have never used the seller’s services before or bought items successfully from their website, it’s not safe to start now.

  1. Criminals will take advantage of your goodwill by posing as charitable organizations.

There are many non-profit and charitable organizations who could use your support right now. However, criminals know this and will use your goodwill to make a profit for themselves. Do your research on charitable organizations by looking them up on the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search, and/or Guidestar Nonprofit Directory. If you receive a phone call requesting money, offer to make the donation directly from the organization’s website instead of over the phone. Do not let anyone pressure you into giving money. And if someone requests your donation in cash, as a gift card, or by wiring money, don’t do it.

Here’s what you can do to protect yourself.

Practicing these safety tips is a good idea at all times, but it’s especially important to be on your guard during a pandemic.

Safety tips to protect yourself:

  • Hang up on robocalls immediately. Although some recordings will say that pressing a number will let you speak to a live operator or remove you from a call list, doing so may actually increase the number of robocalls you receive.
  • Don’t click any links in emails or text messages from sources you don’t recognize. Doing so could download viruses and malware to your device.
  • Fact check information you receive, especially if it seems too good to be true. Even well-meaning people may unintentionally pass on incorrect information. Check your facts with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). You may also check the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website for information on current coronavirus scams.

In short, please use a healthy amount of skepticism with regard to COVID-19 claims, online sellers, and requests for donations. Your vigilance could save you and your loved ones a lot of money and stress.

Although there are criminals looking to take advantage of people during troubling times, there are still legitimate organizations who want to help you. Generations is one of those organizations. 1When a Skip-A-Payment request is accepted for an eligible loan, the terms and conditions of that loan will change in that the maturity date on the eligible loan will be extended and may cause an increase in the final payment amount. Skipping a loan payment will not affect the payment record of the account. The Interest will continue to accrue on all affected loans and the first payment after the skipped period may be all or in part applied to interest that has accrued on the eligible loan. Extension of the note may not be covered by Insurance products such as Payment Protection Credit Insurance and Guaranteed Asset Protection.

The Credit Union may terminate this program at any time. If approved, the Skip-A-Payment request will amend the loan agreement and the regular monthly payment schedule will resume immediately following the month in which payment has been skipped. The following loan types do not qualify for skip payments: Real Estate, Home Equity, Home Improvement, Share and Share Certificate Secured Loans, Auto loans with Collateral Protection Insurance added, Mobile Home, Credit Cards, Line Of Credit, Single Payment & Balloon, Commercial and Business Secured loans, Members Business loans and Employee Brand Attire.

A minimum of six (6) months of payments are required before the first Skip-A-Payment can be approved. Eligible loans can have no more than two (2) monthly payments skipped per 12 month rolling period (Loan Extensions included). In addition, there must be six (6) months between Skip-A-Payment requests.

There will be a $25 processing fee for each skipped loan payment.
